Hormone Shifts in Midlife

Let’s take a minute to talk about what’s happening with our hormones as we move through midlife.

  1. Estrogen
  • Estrogen is the hormone that helps with things like energy, mood, skin, bones, brain health, and even how our body stores fat.
  • As we move into perimenopause and menopause, estrogen starts to fluctuate up and down — and eventually declines.
  • This drop can cause symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, sleep problems, brain fog, and changes in weight (especially more around the belly).
  1. Progesterone
  • Progesterone is kind of like the body’s natural calming hormone — it helps us relax, sleep, and manage stress.
  • It starts to drop earlier than estrogen, often in our 30s and 40s.
  • When progesterone is low, we might notice more anxiety, trouble sleeping, heavier or irregular periods, and feeling like we’re a little more “on edge.”
  1. Testosterone
  • Yes, women have testosterone too! It’s important for muscle strength, energy, motivation, and libido (sex drive).
  • Testosterone levels gradually decline with age.
  • As it drops, some women feel weaker, more fatigued, less motivated, or less interested in intimacy.
  • Building strength through nutrition, movement, and muscle-building activities becomes even more important now to keep feeling strong and confident.

“In short…”
Estrogen helps with energy, skin, mood, and fat storage.
Progesterone helps us stay calm, sleep, and balance stress.
Testosterone helps us feel strong, energized, and motivated.

When these hormones shift — and they will — it’s completely normal but it can feel unsettling if we don’t know what’s happening. The good news is nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress management can make a huge difference in how we feel through these changes.

  • “Which hormone shift do you feel like you notice the most right now — energy, mood, sleep, or strength?”
  • “What’s one thing you would love to feel more balanced with?”

You’re not broken — you’re just shifting. And with the right support, you can feel vibrant and strong through every season of life! These three hormones are like the foundation under your house. As they shift, the ground feels a little wobbly — but when we support ourselves with good nutrition, strength, and mindfulness, we rebuild that foundation even stronger.
