Not feeling motivated? I hear from women all the time that they have lost their mojo and don’t know how to get it back.
I’ve identified five potential issues that may be contributing to your struggle, along with some ideas to help you get back on track. Do any of them sound like you?
1. You’re bored.
There’s no spice, there’s no excitement. There’s no flavor to your routine, whether that’s your workouts or your daily life. And that can be a big reason why you’re not feeling the desire to take action because motivation intrinsically is a “desire to take action.” It’s something that carries you forward.
2. You’re burned out.
You may be overtrained and exhausted without even realizing it. This can be true of many things beyond exercise. Life is full of challenges and responsibility and sometimes you just really need a break.
3️. You’re overwhelmed.
It can become a huge challenge to find within yourself the desire and the drive to keep exercising or keep pushing yourself forward with these health habits that we talk about here all the time between the compounded stress of daily life and an endless to-do list.
4️. You don’t have things to look forward to.
When there isn’t anything to look forward to, or get dressed up for (or even just get dressed for!) you might as well just lay on the couch right? This can be a huge saboteur in what feels like “lack of motivation.”
It may be that you have just gotten stuck in a rut and haven’t created anything fun for yourself to look forward to. So time to shake things up! Plan a hike, plan to get together with your friends, plan something you’re going to get dressed up for.
5️. You need to reconnect with your WHY.
Really connecting deeply with why you want to take these healthy actions in the first place is a very important question to ask yourself.
I think about myself as an 80-year-old woman. I’ve got some time between then and now (like 30 years). I think about that woman I’ll be and how her life is.
I think about being in control of my body at that age, of having access and freedom to make choices. And a lot of that comes down to my mobility and strength, if I’m able to move freely, if I’m able to have autonomy over the course of my life at that age. A lot of that’s going to come down to how I’m taking care of myself right now.
I wanted to mention these things about motivation today because if you feel like you’re not motivated, it’s definitely worth examining them.
Remember that motivation doesn’t come externally, and it’s essential to take the time to tune into what matters to us most and what’s going to serve us the best in our own personal journey of health and wellness.
